Silence In The Trees

“What Do You Hear?”

Around the neighbourhood
Birds perched up on the trees
Silent, still they stood
It caused me some unease

“Why do you not sing?”
I asked one in colour green
“It’s the early morning,
I brought you your favourite bean.”

Though he was suspicious,
The bird could not resist
He perched himself on my hand,
Delivered me the gist

“Why do we have a voice
When none can say a word
Without the fear of wrong
Or being overheard?

“Make-believe or truth,
A falsehood or a lie,
Offend the silence in the wind,
and we might never fly.”

Before he could have finished,
A dreadful sight deterred,
Falling from the tree above
Was a wingless bird

Starlit Echoes

A poem by my fellow March 2018 – Wordplay Contest winner, Leontine Willow

There both of us were,
In the cold of the night
Dancing to the melody
Of fallen stars’ light.

All was deep silence
Lit by the coin moon
And we were there twirling
To an unforeseen tune.

The echo of last year
Now took us by hand,
When I fell in the water
And you led me to land.

My face had bloomed rose
In the aftermath.
But now we’re on a journey,
On a winding, traveling path.
